CHAPTER 20

“Are you sure you want to go out tonight?” Carter asked.

“Yes, Carter,” Ryder replied. “Sorry, am I distracted?”

“You just discovered you sent an apple into the future, so yeah, you’re distracted, but I get it.”

“It barely looked like an apple when it got back, and my mini-machine is toast. I can’t believe I missed it. When I ran the test, I sat there and stared and waited. It didn’t come back, so I moved on.”

“Could it have come back later?”

“I don’t know when it got back. And it wasn’t in the same spot, either, so that’s a little concerning. I ran the test on my table; how it ended up behind the big machine is beyond me right now.”

“You sent something into the future, Ryder. Take the win,” Carter told her, smiling over at her as they walked to the car. “And I promise, I won’t hold it over you if you want to postpone. You’ve had an interesting day, to say the least.”

Ryder took Carter’s hand and said, “I just need to take a shower, and I’m yours. Can you wait at my place for me to get ready?”

“Sure,” Carter replied. “But are you going to tell me why you were running through the woods before?”

“It’s silly,” Ryder dismissed.

“I doubt it; you don’t strike me as a silly kind of person,” Carter remarked, opening Ryder’s door for her.

Then, she moved around the car and climbed into it herself.

“I thought I saw myself again,” Ryder explained.

Carter froze for a second before she put the key in the ignition.

“In the woods?” she asked.

“Yeah. I went out for some fresh air after the awkward meeting that shouldn’t have even happened. Why meet with me if you’re just going to shut me down? I’ll tell you why: they wanted to know if I’d done it. They wanted to know if I’d actually gotten it to work because they wanted to take it away to keep it from people or tell the US government – I don’t know exactly – but that’s the only reason they wasted my time today.”

“But they didn’t know you built the machine, right?”

“No, I never got around to telling them. I also didn’t know about the apple yet. I thought the experiment had failed, so I wasn’t about to bring that up. I was outside, just trying to take a moment before I went to find you, and I saw her. Me; I saw me. And, Carter, I know it sounds crazier than just about everything else you’ve already heard me say, but it was the same woman as before, and I swear to you, she’s me. She had a good fifty yards if not more on me, and when she saw I saw her, she took off. She ran with a limp, but I still couldn’t catch her. She must have had a car waiting.” Ryder paused while Carter pulled the car out of the lot. “I must have had a car waiting. I was just standing there, thinking about how maybe it’s time for me to give this up.
